Medical Education

Pre-Professional Education

As a partnering healthcare institution, YH provides training in undergraduate medical education for three local medical schools:

Around 1000 medical students rotate through over 30 clinical postings here annually. Each posting is led by a teaching lead from the respective clinical department and supported by a posting coordinator from the Pre-Employment Clinical Training (PECT) Medical Team. The hospital has a comprehensive range of medical specialties and diverse patient base. A variety of pedagogical approaches are used, tailored to meet and enhance the learning experience of our students. Under the tutelage and careful supervision of our dedicated and experienced clinician faculty, they learn both the art and science of medicine at YH, within a safe, rich and conducive clinical environment.

Since 2017, we have trained about 2000 nursing students every year to support the nursing workforce movement by MOH. Our partners in nursing education include:

In collaboration with our partners, we work together to refine and enhance our teaching curriculum. We also provide clinical education that focuses on developing and applying students’ classroom knowledge and skills in a clinical setting. Clinical practice placements expose students to practical issues and prepare them for entry level practice in a complex and diverse healthcare environment. The YH nursing education team organises various activities for each clinical placement, such as the Student Forum and Celebration of Success for students. With a wide range of exposure and activities, we aim to nurture confident and competent nurses for the future workforce.

Every year, the Allied Health Services train about 100 students altogether. We provide training for different services including Clinical Psychology, Diagnostic Radiology, Medical Social Service, Nutrition & Dietetics, Pharmacy and Rehabilitation Services. Our partners include:

During the clinical placements, students are given the opportunity to work with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of doctors and nurses, to acquire different skills and knowledge based on their preferences and readiness. At the community hospital, our students learn to work closely in teams to establish holistic care plans for patients. They may also be paired with other students to do peer teaching and learning. They are guided to adopt an evidence-based approach to assess and manage patients. Throughout the journey, clinical educators work closely together with schools to monitor the students’ learning progress using a robust evaluation system.

Over the years, we have been receiving positive feedback from schools and students. Many appreciated that the placement at KTPH had equipped them for future employment and further study.
