Hip Fracture Service

Hip fracture (broken hip bone) are common injuries that often occurs after a fall from a standing height and can have devastating consequences, especially for elderly patients. Comprehensive, integrated care is essential to ensure optimal recovery outcomes.

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital's Hip Fracture Service (HFS) delivers holistic care for hip fracture patients above 60 years old. Our integrated approach begins from the moment patients arrive at the emergency department (ED) and continues through acute care services; including surgery, post-operative rehabilitation and preventive care.

Our service is run by a dedicated, highly professional multidisciplinary team, comprising of orthopaedic surgeons, geriatricians, anaesthetists, ED doctors, cardiologists, nurses, rehabilitation staff (physio, occupational and speech therapists), dietitians, case managers and operations administrators. This comprehensive team operates seamlessly across both Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) and Yishun Community Hospital (YCH) to ensure continuity of care throughout the patient’s recovery journey

Our Services

All patients with confirmed diagnosis of hip fracture are admitted to the Hip Fracture Unit. This enables the patient to receive prompt care from the specialised medical care team.

Our acute pain service team ensures comprehensive pain control throughout the entire patient journey, from admission until postoperative recovery period. Hip fracture causes severe pain, and surgical intervention serves as the definitive treatment for effective pain management. Pain management is particularly critical in elderly patients, as inadequately controlled pain is associated with higher rates of serious complications such as delirium, heart attacks. Our dedicated acute pain service team is actively involved as part of the Hip Fracture Service to control pain throughout patients' stay from admission until discharge.

Patients with hip fractures typically present with multiple chronic medical conditions and are often admitted in an unstable condition due to acute medial illness.

Our team conducts thorough assessment and optimisation of existing medical conditions before surgery. Patient's suitability for operation is assessed and the team ensures timely surgery within 48 hours of admission when the patient's condition is stable. This comprehensive preoperative assessment and management significantly reduces the incidence of intra-operative and post-operative complications.

After the operation, our specialised multidisciplinary team works to stabilise medical conditions and promote optimal recovery. Our comprehensive post-operative care focuses on several key areas: nutrition, swallowing assessment, pneumonia prevention, early mobilisation, therapy sessions and prevention of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (clot in the lung), which may present serious consequences.

Most hip fracture patients require ongoing rehabilitation after their stay at KTPH to help them get back on their feet and regain their pre-fracture independence. The Hip Fracture Service ensures seamless transfer to YCH for individualised rehabilitation care. Our care plan includes goals for mobility, activities of daily living and caregiver training.

Patients who have sustained a hip fracture require close supervision to ensure that it is healing well. Future falls can be prevented by strengthening their bones and this can be done at our specialist clinic at KTPH.

During the visits, our Orthopaedic surgeon and the Geriatrician review patients' recovery at the Falls and Balance Clinic. The review includes assessment and management of recurrent fall risks, provision of bone health advice for fracture prevention, treatment of osteoporosis and engaging patients in the community.
