Respiratory Medicine

We provide a comprehensive range of services for patients who have common or unusual respiratory (pulmonary) complaints or who are found to have a condition that requires the expertise of a Respiratory Physician.

Our Services

We provide full assessments for patients who present with symptoms such as persistent cough, difficulty in breathing, panting, wheezing, excessive cough with sputum or phlegm production and coughing up blood.

Lung Diseases

We are able to investigate, diagnose and treat the whole spectrum of lung diseases such as:

Asthma and airway allergy
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Pneumonia
Pleural effusion and other pleural diseases
Primary and secondary lung cancer
Tuberculosis
Bronchiectasis
Interstitial lung diseases
Obstructive sleep apnoea

Investigations

Our investigative capability includes:

Bronchoscopy
Full lung function testing including spirometry
Lung volumes and diffusion capacity
Metacholine challenge test
Exercise testing
Overnight polysomnography and CPAP titration
Overnight transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring and Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV) titration
Allergy testing
Radiological examinations such as CT scan, MRI and ultrasound/CT guided aspiration or biopsy of effusions or tumours

Intensive Care Unit

Respiratory physicians also look after the Intensive Care Unit, where we take care of critically ill patients who require intensive haemodynamic, respiratory monitoring, treatment with inotropic support and mechanical ventilation, as well as the Non Invasive Ventilation Unit designated for patients needing acute or long term NIV support for respiratory failure.
