Acute Medical Unit

The Acute Medical Unit is a 33 bed ward designed to provide high quality and prompt care for patients admitted to the Department of General Medicine for their first 48-72 hours in the hospital.

We provide rapid assessment, diagnosis and early treatment for selected patients, mostly referred to us by the Emergency Department. AMU patients receive priority scans and blood tests.

Once patients are stable, we either discharge them or transfer them to another ward for ongoing care.

Patient Journey

For their successful effort in initiating quicker diagnosis and treatment for patients and reducing their average length of stay in the hospital, the AMU team won a Silver award in the National HealthCare Group Team Recognition Awards 2018.

Discharge Lounge

A comfortable discharge lounge is available in AMU for mobile patients who are deemed fit for discharge but awaiting medicines or transport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I request to come to AMU?

No. Doctors in the Accident and Emergency department will identify patients who will most likely benefit from AMU care.

Can I stay on in the AMU once I'm stable?

Generally, patients will be discharged or move out of AMU to a general ward once stable to make space for unwell patients who might benefit from AMU care.
