Adjunct Associate Professor Yip Chee Chew

 

Designation:
Adjunct A/Prof. Yip is the Education Director, Education Development Office; Head and Senior Consultant at the Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Department of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital; and Clinical Director at Admiralty Medical Centre. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) as well as Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University.

A/Prof. Yip is an outstanding Ophthalmologist, teacher and mentor. His previous appointments as President, Asia-Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (2010-2012) and Vice Present, College of Ophthalmologists, Singapore, attest to his high professional standing. He has written 47 peer-reviewed publications and 4 book chapters. He is the editor, Orbit & Oculoplastics Section, Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology. Internationally, He received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award (2008), the American Academy of Ophthalmology International Ophthalmologist Education Award (2011) and the Eye and Visionary Award (2012) for his contributions in ophthalmic education.A/Prof. Yip has an educational research interest in effective teaching and learning. As an academic staff of NUS, he innovated and introduced the medical education model, Simulated Pathological Eye Case Scenario (SPECS). SPECS is a novel case-based teaching incorporating mind-mapping; and horizontal integration of clinical and foundation sciences. He also devised and implemented Micro-CEX, a quicker, focused, formative workplace-based assessment tool than conventional mini-CEX, in NUS. His significant contributions to NUS medical undergraduates to better prepare them for primary eye care were recognised with the 2014 Best Teacher Award, 2016 Special Recognition Award (for being a role model teacher) and the 2017 Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence.


As a certified lean 6 sigma black belt practitioner, he has revolutionised the cataract surgery care path in his health cluster with various new care models involving nurses as Anaesthetists-extenders to provide pre-operative medical assessment, peri-operative anaesthetic care; and obviating pre-operative investigations. These quality improvement initiatives have resulted in significant patient cost-savings and reduced cataract surgery lead times His quality improvement achievements were recognised nationally with the 2016 National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity Award (Best Practice in Workforce Transformation). More than 6000 cataract surgery patients have benefited under the new care path.


A/Prof. Yip started a large scale eye screening program (Community and Home Eye Screening Service, CHESS) in 2017 for the Singapore residents in the North. The CHESS program utilises trained nurses and opticians to do first level eye screening in the community. He innovated a flipped classroom, cognition-assisted, blended learning model to cost-effectively train the opticians and nurses to do eye screening examination using simple, low cost devices (Torchlight Eye Screening Test). His national contributions were recognised with the 2017 National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity Award (Best Practice in Workforce Transformation) and the 2018 Public Sector Transformation Award. More than 2500 residents had eye screening under the CHESS program to date.

Ms Mabel Yum is a Principal Clinical Psychologist with the Department of Psychological Medicine at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. She obtained her master in clinical psychology degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.  From her years of working in both Hong Kong and Singapore, she has much experience in helping children, adolescents and adults with psychological/psychiatric conditions.  Ms Mabel Yum also has great interest in weight management.  She received training in the U.S.A. on managing obesity using the multidisciplinary approach.  She is also active in mental health education and has been providing lectures and training workshops to health-care professionals, corporate organizations and the public at large.

Dr Toh received his basic medical degree from the National University of Singapore in the year 2000 and completed his advanced specialist training as an Emergency Physician in 2009. He is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, in terms of curricular development and assessment. He was the Associate Program Director for the EM Residency Program at the National Healthcare Group from 2016-2019.  In 2017, he obtained the Masters of Health Professions Education jointly offered by the Academy of Medicine in Singapore and the Maastricht University in Netherlands.

His special clinical interest is in point of care ultrasound, having completed an Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship in Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, USA and certification as a sonographer with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography in 2010. He co-founded the Alexandra Academy for Clinical and Emergency Sonography (AACES) at KTPH in 2014, which has seen over 1000 participants since.

In year 2006, she embarked on the teaching journey with passion, and through engaging training activities using elements of art and science nurses will be able to deploy knowledge and skills to deliver a high level of comfort and safe care for patients.

Asides her role as a Senior Nurse Educator, she was appointed as the Clinical Educator Lead for Nursing to plan for the training and to strategise its curriculum for pre-registered nurses when the Education Development Office was officially commissioned in year 2013.
