Programme Overview

The NHG Advanced Internal Medicine Residency Program is a structured two year comprehensive program which trains the senior resident through exposure to complex clinical internal medicine cases, didactic lectures, workshops, elective postings, research and teaching opportunities.

Internal Medicine is a broad based medical specialty that encompasses an in-depth understanding of all aspects of clinical medicine in order to deliver patient centered, holistic care.

  Goals & Objectives

  Senior Residents in the NHG Advanced Internal Medicine Residency Program will acquire  proficient knowledge and skills in diagnosis and management of both common and rare  general  medical conditions, and develop a satisfactory level of clinical competence that  will equip him/her  to be a specialist in Internal Medicine.

 

 

Objectives of the Training Programme:

 To become an internist who is:

  • A Highly Proficient diagnostician:in the assessment and diagnosis of acute or chronic multi-system illnesses or undifferentiated conditions.

  • A Highly Proficient provider of Integrated Care:collaborating with other specialties in the  management of patients in a holistic way.
  • A Highly Proficient Problem Solver:who is able to  find  solutions to problems that imprecisely  conform to  established guidelines and available  evidence.

  • A Highly Proficient Patient advocate:who values  patients’ preferences and is able to personalize  management strategies based on patients’  socioeconomic and cultural needs.

  • A Highly Proficient Communicator:who is able to  counsel patients and family members and resolve conflicts.

  • A Highly Proficient Leader and Innovator:who  provides evidence based, cost effective, and  quality  care devoid of conflicts of interest.  Functions in  leadership and management roles.
  • A Highly Proficient Teacher and Member:imparts essential knowledge, attitudes and skills that medical students, young doctors and other health professionals need to acquire if they are to adequately cope with the challenges of modern healthcare.

Senior resident should spend a minimum of 18 months in General Medicine and Acute Medicine to fulfill the training requirements.  He/she will be rotating in General Medicine and wards and Acute Medicine including ICU to see a wide variety of cases.

Resident will also be exposed to ambulatory clinic experience once a week under supervision.

Training Overview

AIM Curriculum

Senior resident will be given training opportunities in the remaining 6 month of their preferred medical sub-specialties. (min. 1 month to a max. of 3 months for each elective rotation)

This also aims to fill up any gap from their BST/Junior residency experience.

Elective postings in sub-specialties include:

-                   Cardiology                                                        -              Respiratory Medicine

-                   Endocrinology                                                    -              Haematology

-                   Dermatology                                                     -              Renal Medicine

-                   Infectious Diseases                                           -              Palliative Medicine

-                   Gastroenterology

 

Educational Activities

KTPH Senior Resident will be engaged in a variety of educational activities.

  • Weekly Educational Activities

      1. Departmental mortality meeting.

      2. Internal Medicine Journal Club: Topic updates, Case Presentations, Update clinical guidelines/ACP           guidelines

      3. Internal Medicine Clinical Teaching: Short Cases, data interpretation and management
          of complex cases

  • Monthly Educational Activities

      1. Combined General Medicine Departmental Journal Club: Topic updates, Difficult/Interesting case              presentation

      2. Hospital Clinico-Pathological Conference (CPC)

      3. Consultant teaching (Acute & General Medicine cases and subspecialty topics and Journal                       interpretation)

      4. Radiology Rounds 

Teaching Opportunities

Senior resident will be actively involved in Undergraduate (NUS) and Postgraduate (MOs & HOs) teaching.

Professional Growth

Senior resident will be encouraged to attend courses, conferences and personal development programmes to improve their knowledge and leadership skills.

Research Opportunities

KTPH has a strong research unit run by Senior Clinicians. The senior resident will be given exposure to research and quality-related projects under the guidance of senior consultants.

Post-Training Opportunities

After successful exit, the KTPH advanced IM senior resident can apply for HMDP training of their interest. The suggested HMDP training includes Acute Medicine, Vascular Medicine, Hypertension, Allergy and Immunology, Travel Medicine and Obstetric Medicine.
