Geriatric Medicine Overview

This is a 3-years program leading to accreditation by the Singapore Specialist Accreditation Board as a specialist in Geriatric Medicine
 

This is a 3-year program across KTPH and TTSH that offers the necessary training for candidates to perform as Consultant Physicians competent in the medical and functional issues of the elderly.  It exposes the residents to various context of care and also the various sub-specialties of the field.

A strong teaching and mentoring culture will see the resident through 2 years of structured training that focuses on the core competencies of a geriatric consultant in various care settings - acute, sub-acute and community settings. Apart from Geriatric sub-specialty rotations, the program includes exposure postings to Palliative Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine as well as Psychiatric Medicine. In addition, the resident will also be exposed to care of the elderly in the context of the community hospital and various community care services.

The final year is tailored towards the interest and the finer attributes of the future specialist. Elective postings and various key courses will be made available to prepare the resident for the task ahead as a confident consultant. 

GERI1GERIATRIC MEDICINE @ KTPH

The Geriatric Services at KTPH is a collaborative range of medical services in the North that spans acute, sub-acute and community care. The department collaborates across care settings as well as other specialties to bring about holistic medical care to the elderly. Situated amongst various institutions of care and research, the department
is able to leverage on these organizations for research and learning.

WHAT IS GERIATRIC MEDICINE?

WHEN WAS GERIATRIC MEDICINE FIRST STARTED IN SINGAPORE? 

The pilot department of Geriatric Medicine was first established by Emeritus doctor FJ Jayaratnam in TTSH in 1988.|

IS THE WORK OF A GERIATRICIAN ONLY IN ACUTE HOSPITALS? 

Apart from establishing programs and services for the acute care of the elderly, geriatricians play an important role in the management of the frail elderly across various settings including home-based and institutional care in the country.

WHAT DO YOU DO MUCH RESEARCH IN GERIATRICS?

Geriatricians are heavily involved in clinical, translational and health services research. Specific fields of interest include models of geriatric care, geriatric syndromes (including falls, incontinence and dementia) frailty and nutrition in the elderly.
