Programme Overview

The NHG Urology Program is a 4-year program that follows on after the Surgery-in-General Program. At the end of the program, you will be eligible for the Urology Exit Examination that is administered by the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. With that qualification, you will then be accepted into the Specialist Register as a qualified Urologist! The key training sites include Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH). You will be rotated in 6-monthly postings as a Senior Resident in the following:

  • TTSH Urology (compulsory) 
  • TTSH General Surgery (compulsory) 
  • KTPH Urology (compulsory) 
  • Singapore General Hospital or National University Hospital Urology (optional) 

Goals & Objectives

The goal of this training programme is to provide trainees with the experience and knowledge so that they graduated as safe and competent consultant urological surgeons.  They will be empowered to continue their journey of continued medical education at consultant level for the benefit of their patients.

The objectives are to provide the trainees with exposure, teaching, supervision, feedback and guidance to achieve the above.

All residents must demonstrate knowledge about established and evolving biomedical & clinical sciences and how to apply this knowledge to patient  care.

 Residents will be able to:

 1. Recognise genitourinary genitourinary problems, given the comprehensive history and physical presentation.

 2. Identify indications for surgical intervention and identify coexisting  medical problems.

 3. Demonstrate knowledge of urologic anatomy and an understanding of the  pathophysiology of urologic condition and diseases including:


a)     Adrenal disease and endocrinology

  k)     Impotence

b)     Laparoscopy

  l)      Renovascular disease

c)     Andrology

  m)    Infertility

d)     Neurology

  n)     Sexual dysfunction

e)     Calculus disease

  o)     Female urology

f)      Obstructive disease

  p)     Renal transplantation

g)     Endourology

  q)     Geriatric urology

h)     Oncology

  r)      Trauma & reconstructive

i)      Extracorporeal shockwave  

  s)      Infectious disease

j)      Pediatric urology

  t)       Urodynamics

 UROWith regard to the curriculum, there will be regular teaching activities  and structured hands-on training provided for by our capable  Faculty Members. Pertinent courses will either be organized for you  or be  made available to you to help you amass knowledge and skills in  clinical competency, communication, research, and quality  improvement. Opportunities for research, presentation at conferences,  and  publicationin journals will be created for you. A consolidated  library,  housing key Urology journals and reference books and DVDs, is  already  available in the department.

You will be assessed at least twice a year and constructive feedback will be given to you to guide you to overcome your shortcomings. Both the Urology departments in TTSH and KTPH are two of the largest units in Singapore in terms of clinical work and variety of Urology conditions. This allows our Residents to have ample learning opportunities. Our Faculty Members are competent surgeons who are dedicated to training the future generation of Urologists.Urology is an excellent specialty to be in and the NHG Urology Program will equip you with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to be an adept Urologist.
