KTPH Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) Overview

Our busy department mainly serves the thriving population of northern Singapore, regularly reviewing a wide range of general ENT cases to provide our residents with a strong foundation in clinical management. Interesting and complex subspecialty work is provided by the department’s expertise in Laryngology (Voice and Airway), Rhinology, Otology (Hearing implants and lateral skull base), Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (including head and neck trauma) and Head and Neck Cancer Surgery. Trainees are given multiple opportunities to learn the challenging skills of ENT surgery with a direct hands-on approach under careful supervision of our senior doctors in a friendly environment.

The weekly education timetable includes protected teaching time for TTSH and KTPH trainees.  In addition to the usual departmental academic and review meetings such as Mortality and Morbidity meetings, there are weekly academic sessions on a variety of clinically relevant topics, lively discussions on areas of clinical controversies, Journal Clubs, mock viva sessions and the annual Christmas quiz.

There is a robust research culture at our department and we are actively involved in multiple research projects as either principal or co-investigators. Our trainees and medical students are encouraged to contribute, as we regularly publish and present our findings at international conferences and peer-reviewed journals.

As the sister hospital partnering TTSH in the NHG Residency Program for ENT, we work closely to inculcate our holistic “patient comes first” tradition in our trainees by emphasising the importance of good communication and bedside manner, together with sound basic knowledge and practical procedural skills. Our structured teaching and academic activities are ultimately guided by the altruistic tenets of the NHG Residency Program to develop a confident yet empathetic trainee who is also an invaluable member of our multidisciplinary team.

We look forward to having you join us as part of our team.
