Laboratory Medicine

The Department of Laboratory Medicine provides a high quality, adequate and convenient laboratory service to our inpatients, outpatients as well as to any client who chooses to patronise our services. The services are organised and provided in a manner that meets applicable local and national standards and regulations.The department aims to provide faster, cheaper and better tests to the customers.

Our laboratory technologists engage in continuous learning and update themselves regularly. They are committed to being the finest in what they do so as to achieve the best possible outcome for our patients and to meet the needs of our clinicians. Continuous learning is the theme of our enthusiasm, and quality is the focus of our practice.

Clinical Chemistry/ Immunology

The Clinical Chemistry division offers a comprehensive routine and non-routine qualitative, quantitative and semi-quantitative biochemical tests using serum/ plasma, urine, CSF and body fluids as specimens. Our section uses fully automated and semi-automated instruments that allow us to make these biochemical tests to be offered and made available within a competitive turn around time to meet the needs of our users and customers.

The Section of Urinalysis, which encompasses blood gas and body fluid analysis, and stand alone/ rapid tests (hCG, dengue, blood ketones, osmolality, and rpr), is managed effectively for both in and out patient services to cover broad and specialised variety of tests.



The Section of Haematology is managed effectively for both in and out patient services to cover broad selection of specialised tests. Automation with the state of the art instruments with bilateral computer inter-phase materialises our vision to make laboratory transactions paperless. The services offered include routine haematology, coagulation tests and blood-borne parasites screening.

Special Chemistry


The Section of Special Chemistry is a branch from Clinical Chemistry division performing tests of slightly higher complexity for more specialised conditions such as autoimmune diseases and infectious diseases.

Molecular Diagnostics


Our Molecular Diagnostics division provides rapid testing for various infectious diseases including H1N1 and Hepatitis B and C PCR. The section generally provides faster and more sensitive testing such as MRSA PCR.

Transfusion of blood and blood components is an established standard way of treating patients who are deficient in one or more blood products and is therefore an essential part of a healthcare institution. The Blood Bank of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital is under an organisation that is carefully designed and managed to provide the blood transfusion services that is as safe as possible to meet the adequate patients’ needs. Our scope of services includes blood grouping, rhesus typing, antibody screening, cryoglobulin, cold agglutinin, Direct Coomb’s Test and compatibility testing.

The Section of Microbiology performs a variety of tests including AFB stain, susceptibility testing, organism identification as well as expertise in areas of Mycology, Parasitology, Bacteriology and Occult Blood.


The Histo/Cytopathology Laboratory is open Monday to Friday 8:00 – 5:30pm and Saturday 08:30 – 12:30pm. The services offered are Histopathology Examination, Intraoperative Consultations (Rush Frozen Sections, Gross Examination of Lesions), Cytopathology (Gynae and non-Gynae) including FNAC and fluids cytology.
