Diuretics
  • Hydrochlorothiazide
  • Frusemide
  • Gets rid of excess water and salt from the body.
  • Can be taken with or without food.
  • Increased frequency of urination, dizziness, loss of appetite.
  • Inform the doctor if you develop persistent and severe muscle cramps or weakness.
  • Rise slowly from a sitting or lying position to minimize dizziness.
  • If you need to take a 2nd dose, do so at least 6 hours before your bedtime.
Beta-blockers
  • Atenolol
  • Propranolol
  • Reduces heart rate and blood pressure to reduce strain on the heart.
  • Can be taken with or without food.
  • Fatigue, dizziness, numbness or tingling of fingers and toes
  • Rise slowly from a sitting or lying position to minimize dizziness
  • Avoid alcohol
Calcium channel blockers
  • Amlodipine
  • Nifedipine LA
  • Keeps calcium from entering the muscle cells of the heart and blood vessels. This relaxes and widens the blood vessels.
  • Can be taken with or without food
  • Constipation, dizziness, swelling of legs, headache, flushing
  • Rise slowly from a sitting or lying position to minimize dizziness
  • Avoid alcohol


Alpha blockers
  • Prazosin
  • Relaxes and widens blood vessels
  • Can be taken with or without food
  • Drowsiness, headache, dizziness
  • Take first dose at bedtime
  • Rise slowly from a sitting or lying position to minimize dizziness
  • Avoid alcohol
