Endoscopy involves the examination of the digestive tract using a slim and flexible tube with a tiny camera mounted at the end.

Endoscopy procedures are performed at the KTPH Endoscopy Centre. These can be divided into routine procedures and advanced procedures. Advanced procedures are more complex and require special equipment and skills.

We perform endoscopy for cancer screening in patients whom have an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancers (eg. history of polyps, more than 50 years old, family history of gastrointestinal cancers). These procedures include:

  • Colon cancer screening with colonoscopy
  • Colon polyp follow up / surveillance with colonoscopy

Routine endoscopic procedures which we perform include:

  • Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) or gastroscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Polypectomy
  • Proctoscopy & piles ligation
  • Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) insertion

The advanced endoscopic procedures which are available include:

  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP)
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
  • Small Bowel Endoscopy (Capsule endoscopy and balloon Enteroscopy)
  • Insertion of Self-Expandable Metal Stents (SEMS)
  • Endoscopic Dilation

The KTPH Endoscopy Centre is equipped with a variety of modern endoscopes to provide a better patient experience and an accurate examination. Our endoscopes come with high definition imaging to ensure a clear image. When necessary, advanced imaging techniques such as narrow band imaging and zoom magnification may be used to further characterise any abnormal findings.

We also have special endoscopes such as dual channel and multi-bending endoscopes to examine difficult-to-reach corners of the digestive tract. Our range of slim to ultra-slim gastroscopes and colonoscopes will ensure a pleasant experience, customised to our patient's individual needs.

Colorectal services at KTPH are provided at a one-stop “Colorectal Centre” that offers comprehensive care in the diagnosis, treatment and support for patients with both benign and malignant (cancer) conditions relating to the bowel (colon, rectum and anal canal).

Our team offers a full range of diagnostic services including Colonoscopy, CT colonography, MRI scanning, Endorectal / endoanal ultrasonography and Anorectal Manometry. All Consultant Surgeons in our team are accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopists for early detection and treatment.

KTPH Colorectal team uses innovative techniques and collaborative care to make surgery safe and to shorten the length of stay. All the surgeons are trained in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, and two-thirds of all elective operations for bowel cancer are completed laparoscopically.

A successful Geriatric Surgical Service (GSS) for elderly patients since 2007 has resulted in improved surgical outcomes. The team has an established and effective enhanced recovery (ERAS) care program with a median length of stay of 5 days after major colorectal operations. The team has also introduced pelvic floor service for disorders like faecal incontinence, prolapse disorders and other functional bowel conditions.

Our close working relationship with medical and radiation oncologists from National Cancer Centre allows us to adopt a multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of colorectal cancers. A bi-monthly multidisciplinary meeting discusses all cancer patients and also reviews outcome data.

Our team is dedicated to providing evidence-based and compassionate care to all our patients.

  • Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopy, the insertion of colonic stents and transrectal ultrasound scans
  • Colonic, low anterior and abdomino-perineal resections, via both open and laparoscopic approaches
  • Trans-anal resection of various anorectal pathologies, including Trans-anal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEMS)
  • Complex anal fistula repair
  • Surgery for inflammatory bowel disease and its complications
  • Surgery for Rectal Prolapse Disorders
  • Assessment and Management of Functional Bowel Disorders like Fecal Incontinence, Chronic Constipation, Defecatory Disorders
  • Multiple options for Hemorrhoidal Disorders
  • Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) of colonic lesions

The Gastroenterology & Hepatology unit of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital treats both local and international patients who present to us with digestive and liver-related problems. We also routinely perform gastric and colorectal cancer screening for people who have significant risk factors.

Our team comprises of dedicated specialists, nurses and medical technologists.

We utilise an array of diagnostic tools such as laboratory tests, modern scanners and advanced endoscopic imaging modalities to aid in the management of our patients’ complex medical conditions.

The Gastroenterology and Hepatology unit provides:

  • Outpatient consultations
  • Direct access endoscopy
  • Direct access urea breath test
  • Inpatient care to patients who require hospitalization.

Our doctors engage in medical education and clinical research as well. In addition, we contribute to the hospital’s multidisciplinary nutrition support service, which advises on enteral and parenteral nutrition-related issues.

Patients with complex Gastrointestinal and Liver diseases at KTPH are managed holistically through our collaborations with specialists such as the Gastrointestinal surgeons and radiologists. This ensures that our patients are managed seamlessly in an integrated, multi-disciplinary manner. We also partner external hospitals in the training of junior residents and in the referral of patients who may require a liver transplant.

At the KTPH Endoscopy Center, our specialists perform a high volume of endoscopic procedures annually. We endeavour to adhere to international standards of quality assurance in our daily procedures, so as to continuously achieve the best outcomes for our patients. It is our aim to provide specialised, cost-effective and high-quality care.

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) provides a comprehensive range of services for patients who have a common or unusual respiratory (pulmonary) complaint or who are found to have a condition that requires the expertise of a Respiratory Physician.

We provide full assessments for patients presents themselves with a persistent cough, difficulty in breathing, panting, wheezing, sputum production or phlegm, coughing up blood and weight loss.

We are able to investigate, diagnose and treat the whole spectrum of lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, pleural effusion and other pleural diseases, primary and secondary lung cancer, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, pulmonary fibrosis and other interstitial lung diseases, occupational lung diseases and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Our investigative capability includes bronchoscopy, full lung function testing including spirometry, lung volumes, diffusion capacity, body plethysmography, methacholine challenge test, exercise testing, overnight polysomnography and CPAP titration, allergy testing, radiological examinations such as CT scan, MRI and ultrasound/CT guided aspiration or biopsy of effusions or tumours.

Respiratory physicians also look after the Intensive Care Unit, where we take care of critically ill patients who require intensive haemodynamic, respiratory monitoring, treatment with inotropic support and mechanical ventilation.
