About the Trainers

Dr. Steven Hickman is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and the Founding Director of the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Center for Mindfulness. He is an Associate Clinical Professor in the UCSD Department of Family and Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Hickman is also the Executive Director of the non-profit Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, which is dedicated to disseminating the practice of self-compassion throughout the world. Steven is a certified teacher and trainer of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindful Self-Compassion.

Having founded the UCSD Mindfulness-Based Professional Training Institute, he specializes in the training of teachers of mindfulness and self-compassion. He has conducted many courses in many countries (USA, Europe, Australia, China and Korea, just to name a few).

Ms Tina Gibson is an experienced and passionate Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) and Mindfulness Teacher, having facilitated programs within the Education and Health Care System, Cancer Support, and the general community. She has a sound knowledge of health and education stemming from years of experience working with diverse populations in the roles of Kinesiologist, Health Care Worker, Rehabilitation Counsellor, Health Educator and Emergency Paramedic.

Tina is currently the only Certified MSC Teacher Trainer and Mentor in Australia. Having taught alongside numerous other MSC Senior Teacher Trainers.

She currently offers MSC programs and workshops across Australia and is a member of the International Advisory Council for MSC and the Mindfulness Teachers' Network South Australia.

Pre-requisites for taking the MSC Teacher Training

  • Established daily mindfulness practice of at least two years
  • Ongoing, daily, sitting meditation practices
  • Ongoing practice of loving kindness and self-compassion in daily life
  • Attendance in at least one 5-day silent, teacher-led mediation retreat
  • Previous participation in an 8-week Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) course or 5-day Mindful Self-Compassion Intensive (at least 6 months before the teacher training).
  • Experience in teaching meditation in groups.


At the completion, participants should be able to:

  • Deepen one’s personal practice of responding to difficult emotions with mindfulness and compassion
  • Understand the current theory and research on self-compassion
  • Identify the core themes and practices presented in each of the eight group sessions of MSC, plus the retreat day
  • Develop the skills necessary to facilitate MSC groups, including how to guide meditation, teach from each participant’s direct experience and facilitate group cohesion

Required Reading

Required for all teacher trainees to have as a reference, but not necessary to read all before coming to Teacher Training.

Cancellation policy

A refund (minus your SGD$900 non-refundable deposit) will be made for cancellations submitted in writing via email 30 days prior to the training. No refunds will be allowed after that date. In the unlikely event that the course is cancelled, we are responsible only for a full refund of the registration fee and not for transportation, hotel accommodations or any miscellaneous expenses.


Before registration, please ensure that you have fulfilled the pre-requisites listed above.

Registration in the training does not guarantee acceptance into the training. You must submit an application for review by the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion and you will be notified afterwards if you have been formally accepted.
